Aramco and WRO Launch STEM Entrepreneur Program to Turn Student Robotics into Startups

Global energy company Aramco and the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Association have formed a strategic partnership to launch the WRO STEM Entrepreneur Program, a new initiative designed to advance student robotics projects from competition arenas into viable startups. Held in Hyderabad, India, on September 28, 2026, the international pilot event brought together 20 student robotics teams from 13 countries to pitch their working solutions directly to entrepreneurs, investors, and industry leaders.

Conducted as an accelerator-style pilot following the WRO Open Championship Asia, the program departs from traditional robotics competitions focused solely on technical scoring, giving teams practical experience in what they might face when launching a real startup.

Beyond Competition Scoring: The Mission of the STEM Entrepreneur Program

The World Robot Olympiad engages thousands of young innovators from more than 100 countries each year. However, high-potential hardware and software projects created during competitions frequently remain confined to the classroom or contest arena once events conclude.

To bridge the gap between STEM education and entrepreneurship, Aramco and the WRO Association developed a platform where students defend how their technologies work, why they matter, and how they can bring their solutions to market. The pilot was organized locally in collaboration with the India STEM Foundation, the National Organizer of WRO in India.

  • Startup-Style Live Pitching: Rather than presenting strictly to contest judges, student teams pitched live to entrepreneurs, investors, and industry executives, explaining their working solutions and how their projects could develop beyond the competition.
  • Evaluating Real-World Value: Projects were evaluated on technical quality as well as commercial potential, practical problem-solving capability, and real-world applicability.

20 Teams Across 13 Nations: Industry Leaders and Venture Capital Evaluation

The Hyderabad event brought together 20 Future Innovators teams from 13 countries: Ghana, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Africa, and Uganda.

The judging panel included active entrepreneurs, investors, and industry professionals, including representatives from Aramco Ventures, the venture capital arm of Aramco.

  • Live Inquiries and Defense: Students fielded questions from industry leaders and investors, defending the technical and practical value of their solutions in a simulated startup environment.
  • Practical Application Areas: Solutions addressed urgent challenges across various sectors, ranging from healthcare automation devices to firefighting robotics.

Four Winning Teams Awarded: $5,000 Project Funding and Six-Month Mentorship

Following evaluation, the judges selected four co-equal winning teams that demonstrated both technical excellence and commercial viability.

Each of the four winning teams receives a $5,000 USD award (from a total $20,000 prize pool) along with six months of mentoring from industry and investment professionals from Aramco Ventures and the India STEM Foundation to help further develop their solutions.

  • Philippine RSHS3 Team's Healthcare Device (CARED): Among the winning projects was the Clinical Automation and Evaluation Device (CARED) developed by the Regional Science High School 3 (RSHS3) team from the Philippines. Designed as an eco-friendly, low-cost device, CARED automatically collects patient health data to improve treatment efficiency, providing a sustainable alternative to costly standalone medical apparatus.
  • Six-Month Incubation Support: Moving beyond standard contest trophies, the six-month mentorship phase connects student innovators with industry and investment professionals from Aramco Ventures and the India STEM Foundation to support ongoing project development.

Following the inaugural pilot in Hyderabad, the WRO Association and Aramco plan to expand the program format to National Organizers worldwide, giving more students opportunities to present their robotic innovations to industry.
