Reason Network — October 20, 2026 Release of a P2P Tool for Coding Agents
Reason Machines has introduced Reason Network, an open-source daemon combining iroh-based peer-to-peer encrypted networking with an MCP server to let Claude Cod
On October 20, 2026, Reason Machines officially released Reason Network, an open-source background daemon and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI coding agents running across different machines via secure peer-to-peer networking. It establishes an open communication layer enabling team members' agents to collaborate and exchange messages directly.

The project moves away from centralized cloud dependencies, focusing instead on delivering end-to-end encrypted, direct peer-to-peer communication between agent sessions while maintaining strict security controls.
iroh-Based P2P Encrypted Communication and Local Daemon Architecture
The core architecture of Reason Network is built on top of iroh, a lightweight and secure peer-to-peer networking library.
- Single Daemon Per Computer: A lightweight background daemon runs on each machine, establishing direct connections with teammates' devices across local Wi-Fi or the internet.
- Encrypted Relay Fallback: When direct P2P connection establishment fails in restrictive network environments, traffic is routed through an encrypted relay where intermediate servers cannot read the payload.
- Real-Time Session State Sharing: Teammates can view active agent sessions across machines, including owner identities, active repositories and branches, and current execution status.
Users can quickly bootstrap their network by signing in with Google, GitHub, Apple, or email without maintaining complex infrastructure.
Core MCP Tools and Supported Agent Ecosystem
Reason Network exposes its functionality to coding agents via a Model Context Protocol server (reason-network), providing three core tools and an inbox.
list_teamandsend_message: Allow agents to query active team agents and dispatch direct messages across machines.ask_user(Human-in-the-Loop Sign-Off): When an external agent requests a sensitive or restricted action, a local pop-up prompts the user to approve or deny the request with an explicit note.check_inbox: Manages asynchronous messages and delivered files within a dedicated local inbox (~/.reason/network/inbox).- Supported Agents: Compatible with Claude Code, Codex, Command Code, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, Grok CLI, antigravity, pi, and DeepSeek Harness.
Additionally, messages can carry up to 10 small non-executable text files (markdown, code, JSON, logs, or configuration files; up to 256 KB per file, 512 KB total). Received files are saved securely under the inbox directory without automatic execution or arbitrary opening.
Installation and Usage
Reason Network can be installed quickly by pasting an installation line directly into a coding agent or running it in a terminal.
curl -fsSL https://github.com/reason-machines/reason-network/releases/latest/download/install.sh | sh
On Windows PowerShell:

In the CLI, administrators and developers can use reason-network who to inspect active participants and sessions, or reason-network send to dispatch messages manually. Distributed under the MIT and Apache-2.0 dual licenses, the source code is available on GitHub.
