Excalidraw CLI Released: Local Diagram Rendering and AI Agent Visual Feedback
Excalidraw has officially released its CLI tool supporting local files and Excalidraw+ integration, enabling automated diagram rendering and visual feedback pip
On October 9, 2026, the team behind the open-source virtual whiteboard and diagramming tool Excalidraw (@excalidraw) announced the official release of the Excalidraw CLI alongside its public GitHub repository (github.com/excalidraw/cli).

The newly launched Excalidraw CLI is designed to render local diagram files directly from the command line and connect with Excalidraw+ cloud workspaces for automated workflows. It is drawing attention as a practical tool for building visual feedback loops in AI coding agent pipelines.
Local File Rendering and Excalidraw+ Cloud Integration
Excalidraw CLI operates across both local and cloud environments:
- Local File Processing: Render
.excalidrawfiles and diagram assets directly from the terminal. - Excalidraw+ Account Login: Authenticate with an Excalidraw+ account to manage cloud-hosted diagrams and workspace resources from the command line.
- Automation Pipeline Integration: Integrate diagram export and conversion steps into CI/CD build stages and local development scripts.
Visual Feedback and Verification Loops for AI Agents
A primary use case highlighted by the Excalidraw team is supporting AI agent workflows.
When AI coding agents generate architecture diagrams or system flows, the Excalidraw CLI allows them to quickly render the output into visual representations. This enables agents to inspect rendered diagrams, catch overlapping labels or misaligned arrows, and iteratively refine visual assets before finalizing their output.
Comparison with MCP (Model Context Protocol) and Recommendations
Addressing developer inquiries regarding the relationship between the new CLI and existing Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations, the Excalidraw team outlined current recommendations and future plans:
- Combined Use Recommended for Now: MCP currently provides more mature layouting and context features, making a hybrid workflow practical depending on task requirements.
- Future Integration Roadmap: Layout and context capabilities will be progressively integrated directly into the Excalidraw CLI in upcoming updates.
Accessing Excalidraw+ cloud features requires an account login, while local file rendering runs independently without authentication.
