Crafting Apps: Open-Source Creative Suite Rebuilding 7 Adobe Apps in Pure Rust

A new open-source creative suite named 'Crafting Apps' has been released, providing alternatives to seven flagship applications in the Adobe Creative Cloud ecosystem. Built by the ArtCraft development team and published on GitHub, the suite completely avoids Electron and WebViews, leveraging pure Rust and wgpu-powered GPU acceleration to deliver lightweight, highly responsive clean-room reimplementations. Anchored by PhotoCraft (v0.2.0), an open-source Photoshop alternative, the project has quickly gained thousands of GitHub stars and captured widespread attention across the developer community.

By stepping away from recurring SaaS subscription models, Crafting Apps provides creators with full local ownership and offline capability. At the same time, it introduces native Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers inside each application, enabling modern LLM coding agents to automate creative editing workflows directly.

Clean-Room Architecture and the Seven-App Adobe Alternative Lineup

At the core of Crafting Apps is a lineup of seven standalone creative applications designed to match the core workflows of Adobe's flagship creative tools.

Each app is developed through a clean-room approach, avoiding any proprietary Adobe code and rebuilding format parsers and interaction patterns from the ground up:

  • PhotoCraft (Photoshop alternative): A raster image editor supporting layers, masks, 16 adjustment layer types, layer styles, vector shapes, type, and brushes. Currently in early alpha at version v0.2.0.
  • VectorCraft (Illustrator alternative): A vector illustration tool designed for precision Bézier curves and scalable artwork. (In development)
  • FilmCraft (Premiere Pro alternative): A native timeline-based multitrack video editing application. (In development)
  • LightCraft (Lightroom alternative): A non-destructive RAW development workbench and photo library manager. (In development)
  • PrintCraft (Acrobat Pro alternative): A specialized PDF workbench supporting document inspection, annotations, and page manipulation. (Early alpha)
  • EffectCraft (After Effects alternative): A motion graphics and keyframe-based visual effects compositor. (In development)
  • DesignCraft (InDesign alternative): A desktop publishing and multi-column page layout tool. (In development)

While all seven projects are published on GitHub, only PhotoCraft and PrintCraft have reached the early alpha stage, with the remaining five tools actively in development.

Bypassing Electron: wgpu Native GPU Acceleration and WebAssembly Support

A defining engineering decision of the suite is the complete exclusion of Electron and heavy browser-wrapper frameworks.

To overcome the memory overhead and input latency common to web-wrapped desktop utilities, Crafting Apps is implemented entirely as a native engine in Rust.

  • wgpu-Powered Hardware Acceleration: Utilizing a wgpu compositor that targets low-level platform graphics APIs—Metal on macOS, DirectX 12 on Windows, and Vulkan on Linux—the suite delivers low-latency brush rendering and real-time layer blending even on large canvases.
  • WebAssembly (WASM) Browser Execution: In addition to native desktop binaries across macOS, Windows, and Linux, the codebase compiles to WebAssembly, allowing users to run the same interface and engine directly inside a modern web browser without local installation.
  • Byte-Accurate PSD/PSB Roundtrip Validation: Flagship tool PhotoCraft can open and save Adobe's proprietary PSD and large-document PSB formats while preserving layer hierarchies, blend modes, and mask data. In the project's test corpus, it verified byte-accurate lossless roundtrips across 134 out of 135 reference PSD files (and 307 out of 309 in extended testing).

500+ Unified Commands and Built-In MCP Server for AI Agent Workflows

What distinguishes Crafting Apps from conventional open-source alternatives is its agent-ready architecture.

Traditional proprietary creative software is bound by restrictive cloud licensing terms and cumbersome scripting interfaces that make it difficult for autonomous AI agents to interact with a canvas. Crafting Apps solves this by design:

  • Unified Command Registry: GUI button interactions, CLI terminal pipelines, and JSON control channels all dispatch through a shared registry of over 500 discrete commands.
  • Embedded MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server: Each application embeds an Anthropic MCP-compliant server out of the box. External LLM agents can connect directly via the MCP server to inspect project state and execute automation across the command registry without screen-scraping.

Permissive Dual Licensing and Current Alpha-Stage Boundaries

The entire Crafting Apps suite is published under a permissive dual MIT / Apache-2.0 license. There are no recurring seat costs, activation checks, or cloud lock-in; developers can inspect, fork, modify, and build the software completely offline.

However, creators considering immediate production adoption should note clear practical boundaries:

  • Alpha-Stage Functional Gaps: As PhotoCraft and PrintCraft are in early alpha, they do not yet match the full maturity of commercial Photoshop, including detailed brush dynamics, third-party plugin ecosystems, or advanced typography and typesetting features.
  • No Proprietary Project File Loading: Because this is an independent clean-room effort without official Adobe endorsement or partnerships, direct opening of closed proprietary project files—such as After Effects .aep files—is not supported.

By merging the safety and efficiency of Rust with native GPU rendering and open AI agent protocols, Crafting Apps represents a notable step forward in open-source creative tooling.
