Core Architecture and Features
Pixel enables smooth 120 FPS graphics rendering directly within terminal windows. Unlike traditional text-based Terminal User Interface (TUI) libraries, it supports precise pixel manipulation and flexible component layouts.
A standout capability is its built-in Chromium webview component, allowing developers to render web-based interfaces and rich content natively inside terminal applications. UI components are declared using React, requiring both pixel and react as project dependencies.
SSH Remote Operation and Rendering
Designed to operate seamlessly over SSH remote connections, Pixel optimizes bandwidth by transmitting only modified pixel blocks encoded in base64 via PTY. This approach achieves composite rendering on the client side while keeping remote latency manageable.
Users should note that running embedded Chromium webviews and pixel streaming does increase runtime memory and CPU consumption compared to lightweight text-only TUI tools. Additionally, building layouts requires a React dependency chain.
Use Cases
Pixel provides a robust option for developers building advanced terminal dashboards, system monitoring utilities, or interactive CLI applications that benefit from high-frame-rate graphics and embedded web elements.
