OpenWA: Self-Hosted Open-Source WhatsApp API Gateway
OpenWA is an open-source WhatsApp API gateway that lets you build messaging automation on your own server without Meta's paid APIs, featuring pluggable storage
OpenWA is an open-source API gateway designed to implement WhatsApp messaging automation and bot integrations on your own infrastructure without relying on Meta's official paid APIs. Built on Node.js 22 LTS and NestJS under the MIT license, it can be easily self-hosted using Docker.

Pluggable Architecture
To maximize extensibility, OpenWA adopts a pluggable architecture for data management and storage. Administrators can swap core infrastructure components through configuration without modifying source code.
- Databases: Supports SQLite for lightweight deployments and PostgreSQL for production scale.
- Media Storage: Routes incoming and outgoing media to local storage or AWS S3 and compatible object stores.
- Caching: Configures Redis caching or runs without a cache layer depending on traffic demands.
Multi-Session Support and Granular Security
A single gateway instance can run multiple WhatsApp sessions simultaneously, simplifying multi-account management. Furthermore, instead of issuing broad master keys, OpenWA provides granular access controls allowing API keys to be restricted to specific sessions (session-scoped) or exact chats and groups (chat-scoped).
Operational Considerations
Because OpenWA is a web-client-based unofficial gateway rather than Meta's official Business API, using a dedicated phone number is strongly recommended to minimize account ban risks.
Additionally, the built-in backup script (scripts/backup.sh) only compresses the local media directory. When running with an S3 bucket backend, operators must configure separate cloud-native backup and snapshot policies for durability.
