Rotating OpenRouter Free Models Inside Muse: A Circulation Tip
A tip from X for pairing Muse with the FreeToken-Bots skill and Pi Agent to keep swapping in newly released OpenRouter free models. Covers the posted 3-step ord
The original author is Lonely (@Lonely__MH) on X, who credits @MinLiBuilds for the idea. Posted on October 9, 2026, the core proposal is simple: because new free models keep appearing on OpenRouter, keep a rotation workflow that swaps in a fresh free model as they arrive.

The 3 steps as posted
The step order below follows the original post exactly.
- Open Muse and send: install the skill at
https://github.com/limin112/min-skill/tree/main/skills/FreeToken-Bots, together with your own OpenRouter key (OPENROUTER_API_KEY=plus the key). - Then ask it to install Pi Agent.
- Then have Muse configure Pi Agent to use free models.
The author describes the process as simple enough to just forward the post itself to Muse. In replies, the author said new free models appear daily, and described free-model quality as fine for everyday use. @MinLiBuilds, credited as the idea source, reacted enthusiastically in the thread, and the author returned the credit.
Caveats before trying it
Read these as a mix of the author's claims and other repliers' warnings.
- Rate limits and 429s: One replier noted that OpenRouter free models usually carry rate limits, so swapping models does not remove the daily quota question. Another replier reported hitting 429 errors frequently. Rotation does not erase quotas.
- How the key is passed: One replier asked whether pasting the key into chat is a security risk and whether an environment variable would work; the author replied that it can. Before pasting a key into a chat window as the original post suggests, consider the environment-variable path first.
- The $5 top-up suggestion is unverified anecdote: In several replies the author suggested trying a $5 top-up. That is the author's suggestion only — no official pricing or quota document is part of this tip's evidence, so no effect is claimed here.
Scope of this tip
This article covers only what the original post and same-thread replies directly support. Specific free model names and daily call counts are not in the verified evidence, so they are left out. Free-model lineups and terms change often, so check OpenRouter's current guidance before relying on any of this.
