Pele: Obsidian's Next-Gen Diagram Engine Bringing Speed and Mermaid Compatibility

In modern technical documentation and markdown workflows, text-based diagramming is vital for clarifying architectures, yet heavy rendering pipelines have long hindered real-time responsiveness. Steph Ango (@kepano), CEO of Obsidian, has addressed this friction by releasing Pele, an open-source rendering engine built to support modern Mermaid syntax with zero dependencies. Slated to become Obsidian's next default diagram renderer, Pele combines instant rendering with cohesive application-wide theming.

Overcoming Bottlenecks in the Mermaid Ecosystem

Mermaid has become the standard text-to-diagram format, letting developers author flowcharts and charts in plain text. However, mermaid.js has drawn criticism for its heavy bundle, complex dependencies, and rendering latency. In seeking to make Obsidian fast and visually unified, kepano found existing tooling too bulky, slow, and hard to theme. Named after Pele ([ˈpɛlɛ]), the goddess of volcanoes and fire, the library resolves these issues while preserving compatibility with modern Mermaid syntax.

Zero-Dependency Design and Obsidian Adoption

Pele's key technical advantage is its self-contained design, free of external runtime dependencies. By shedding third-party code, it achieves a bundle roughly six times smaller than mermaid.js, alongside responsive device-width scaling and effortless theming. Kepano confirmed Pele will power the next release of Obsidian, yet it is available today under the MIT license with online docs and a playground. This enables web developers to integrate the engine into external tools without depending on Obsidian.

Author Benchmarks, Caveats, and Practical Scope

Kepano reports that Pele renders diagrams 100 to 500 times faster than mermaid.js. While promising for note collections containing numerous diagrams, users should note that these speedups and the 6x smaller bundle are author-reported metrics lacking independent third-party benchmark verification. Real-world validation is still needed to test parity across intricate subgraphs and edge cases. Nonetheless, Pele's dependency-free design offers a compelling blueprint for responsive document rendering.
