Quantization and Abliteration Tip: Why Compressing Before Uncensoring Prevents Performance Drop

Open-source LLM tuning and quantization contributor dealign.ai (@dealignai) shared a key technical tip regarding the order of low-bit quantization and abliteration when releasing their uncensored DeepSeek v4.1 Flash 1017 model.

Why Quantization Must Precede Abliteration

Abliteration modifies internal model weights to bypass safety guardrails and remove refusal behaviors. However, performing abliteration on full-precision weights before compressing them to low-bit formats (such as ~2.8bpw) introduces quantization loss that distorts the carefully adjusted weight directions, often causing the model to resume refusals or suffer severe capability degradation.

Comparing this to medical dosing, dealign.ai noted that compressing a heavily modified model incorrectly is akin to giving the exact same dose meant for an 8-ton entity to a 2.9-ton entity. To preserve core capabilities and ensure the uncensored modification holds, quantization to the target bit-width must occur first, followed by abliteration on top of that quantized weight space.

Practical Considerations for LLM Tuning

  • Strict Ordering: When achieving an uncensored model purely through weight manipulation rather than SFT or runtime prompt tricks, quantize first and abliterate second.
  • Resource Efficiency: The performance preservation gap becomes especially pronounced under extreme compression schemes like NVFP4 or ultra-low-bit (~2.8bpw) targets.
  • Reasoning Effort Compliance: Properly sequenced models successfully execute requests across both low and maximum reasoning effort settings without breaking constraints.
