DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Released: Native Timeline AI Assistant Integration and License Policy Overhaul

On September 8, 2026, Blackmagic Design officially rolled out DaVinci Resolve 21.1, a minor update to its professional video editing and color grading software suite. Unveiled ahead of IBC 2026 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, this release is available as a free update for existing DaVinci Resolve 21 users.

Led by native AI assistant integration that bridges third-party LLMs directly into the timeline editing environment, the 21.1 release also delivers Inspector preset saving, a longstanding request from editors worldwide, alongside a major licensing policy revision for the professional Python scripting API.

Native AI Assistant (Claude and ChatGPT) Integration and Timeline Workflows

The most significant technical leap in DaVinci Resolve 21.1 is the official rollout of native 'AI assistant integration'.

Echoing broader industry shifts, such as Adobe testing third-party foundation models in Premiere Pro beta, DaVinci Resolve now provides a native interface to directly connect major third-party LLMs, including Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT, from within the application.

• BYOK (Bring Your Own Key) Model: Activated immediately once users register their personal API tokens in application preferences.
• Self-Contained NLE Interface: Without switching between external web browsers or standalone applications, editors can perform timeline editing assistance, clip metadata analysis, and natural language editing command processing directly inside DaVinci Resolve's edit workspace.

Unlike locked-in AI tools tied to proprietary recurring cloud subscriptions, this architecture gives creators the flexibility to select their preferred LLM provider and model while retaining direct control over their token consumption.

Saving Inspector Presets and Enhancements to Fusion and Color Pages

Practical editing ergonomics and page-specific toolsets have also received extensive upgrades.

A long-demanded feature from the editing community, 'Save Inspector Presets', is now officially supported. Frequently repeated parameter settings, such as video cropping, scaling, and audio attribute adjustments, can be saved as custom presets and applied instantly to clips whenever needed. The Trim Editor has also been refined for greater precision, alongside strengthened multicam synchronization and more robust audio/video track controls.

• Fusion Page: The Krokodove motion graphics and 3D toolset, integrated in the 21 major release, gains over 25 new nodes and custom macro controls.
• Color Page: For DaVinci Resolve Studio commercial license holders, the new MultiMaster trim feature allows colorists to fine-tune shared grading parameters across multiple clips individually.

Python API Moves to Studio Exclusively While Perpetual Licensing Remains Firm

A notable policy shift has also taken effect across the automation and scripting ecosystem.

The Python scripting API, previously available without restriction in the free base edition (DaVinci Resolve Free), is now officially reserved exclusively for the commercial DaVinci Resolve Studio edition.

Blackmagic Design stated that this decision was necessary to fundamentally prevent exploits where the free version's Python API was abused to bypass and unlock premium Studio-only features. Studios and developers relying on in-house pipelines or custom automation scripts will need to verify their Studio license status (a one-time purchase of $295).

At the same time, Blackmagic Design reaffirmed its distinct business philosophy: rejecting the recurring cloud SaaS subscription model that holds creators' assets and projects hostage, and continuing to fund persistent R&D through one-time perpetual license sales.
