ComfyUI Launches 'Open Call' Dev Platform Challenge to Open-Source Paid AI Features with $10,000 Grand Prize and RTX 5090 GPUs

On October 6, 2026, Comfy Org, the team behind node-based generative AI workflow tool ComfyUI, officially announced the 'Open Call: Comfy Dev Platform Challenge'. The two-week community challenge invites builders to take creative AI capabilities currently locked behind commercial subscription paywalls and recreate them as open-source workflows on the Comfy developer stack.

The initiative lists NVIDIA and Runpod as supporters (Powered by), alongside OSS ecosystem partners Black Forest Labs (FLUX) and LTX.

"The Models Are Open, but the Apps Aren't": Mission and Rationale

Comfy Org outlined the core premise behind the challenge: while open-weight foundation models have largely closed the capability gap with proprietary models, the user-facing application layer above them remains predominantly closed.

High-demand features such as cinematic camera controls, character consistency, relighting, face swapping, and lip-sync frequently sit behind subscription tiers. Technically, however, each of these features represents a structured, reproducible workflow built on top of foundation models.

The challenge directs participants to pick one of these paid features and reimagine it as an open-source solution built on the Comfy developer stack:

  • Leveraging the Comfy Developer Ecosystem: Builders can use the Comfy API, Comfy SDK, or Comfy Router to deploy workflows and access image, video, 3D, and audio models.
  • Open-Source Distribution: Completed submissions must be published as public, reproducible repositories under an open-source license.

Award Structure: $10,000 Grand Prize, Three RTX 5090 GPUs, and Partner Bonuses

The challenge features cash, hardware, and model provider bonuses:

  • Grand Prize: $10,000 cash prize
  • Three RTX 5090 GPUs: three NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 units for main-category winners
  • Partner bonuses: bonus prizes from LTX and FLUX (including API credits for the OSS bonus tracks)

The first 100 sign-ups receive free credits.

Technical Requirements, Judging Criteria, and Schedule

Submissions must demonstrate full reproducibility and community usability:

  • Implementation Platform: Projects must be built using the Comfy Developer Platform, Comfy Cloud, or the Comfy SDK.
  • Repository and Video Demo: Entrants must provide a licensed, reproducible public repository so others can run the pipeline independently, alongside a demonstration video.
  • Content and IP Guidelines: All entries must be lawful, safe-for-work (SFW), and free from unlicensed intellectual property or likenesses.

The submission window closes on October 19, 2026, at 9:00 AM PT. Official winners will be announced on October 22, 2026.
