Starting in v2.1.292, users can prompt the primary Claude Code instance to delegate subagents with specific effort (reasoning intensity) levels tailored to each individual task.
The Added effort Parameter in the Agent Tool
Previously, configuring reasoning effort was primarily handled globally within agent configuration files. In the v2.1.292 release, the internal Agent tool officially expanded its schema to accept an explicit effort argument on each call.
This enhancement enables granular, per-task reasoning allocations. Developers can assign lightweight, fast reasoning to routine indexing or data summarization, while reserving deeper, high-effort reasoning passes for intricate logic refactoring and security code audits.
Practical Prompt Example
When dispatching multiple subtasks through the main Claude Code orchestrator, you can specify reasoning intensity directly in natural language:
1. Run the data summarization subagent with low effort.
2. Run the final code review subagent with high effort.
For developers frequently leveraging subagents and multi-agent coordination, this provides immediate control over both token economy and task fidelity.
