Selected fellows will help Claude reason through and solve the most demanding problems in their respective fields. Scheduled to run for four months starting in January 2027, the full-time roles offer between $100,000 and $167,000 in total compensation (annualized at $300,000 to $500,000 per the job posting), attracting widespread attention across academia and technical research communities.
Program Schedule, Work Structure, and Competitive Compensation
The two fellowships operate as intensive four-month full-time engagements, featuring a compensation structure aimed at attracting academic and domain specialists.
- Program Duration: Runs full-time for four months, from January 12, 2027, through May 8, 2027.
- Compensation: Total compensation ranges from $100,000 to $167,000 for the 4-month term, which annualizes to $300,000 to $500,000 based on the official recruitment postings.
- Application Deadline and Notification: Applications close on October 28, 2026. Following review and evaluations, final admission decisions are scheduled to be communicated to candidates by November 20, 2026.
Selected fellows will focus on helping Claude reason through and address the most challenging problems within their respective academic and professional disciplines.
Track Qualifications: Hands-on STEM Researchers vs. Conceptual Reasoning Scholars
The initiative branches into two distinct specialized tracks, each targeting different analytical domains and skill sets.
The STEM Fellowship targets practitioners holding a Ph.D. in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics with several years of subsequent professional research experience, such as postdoctoral researchers or faculty members. Applicants must have demonstrable hands-on experience utilizing Claude and Anthropic's command-line agent tool, Claude Code, in their daily scientific or software workflows.
The Conceptual Reasoning Fellowship focuses on disciplines beyond quantitative empirical engineering, seeking experts in foundational conceptual analysis and formal argumentation. The fellowship invites scholars with a Ph.D., current doctoral candidates, or researchers with equivalent experience in philosophy, cognitive science, economics, public policy, or law. Fellows in this track will focus on helping Claude effectively reason through demanding questions in these disciplines.
All applicants must submit a resume and references through the online portal. STEM track candidates are additionally required to submit essential research essay responses outlining their domain expertise and proposed project ideas. Cover letters remain optional across both tracks.
Important Requirements: Visa Sponsorship Constraints and In-Person Orientation
While the program offers substantial remuneration, prospective applicants must note several explicit restrictions:
- No Visa Sponsorship: Anthropic does not provide visa sponsorship for either fellowship. Applicants must already possess full-time legal work authorization in the United States or be able to secure it independently prior to the start date.
- Location and Mandatory In-Person Orientation: The primary work location is San Francisco. While remote work within the United States may be considered on a limited basis, all selected fellows must attend a mandatory one-week in-person orientation in San Francisco at the start of the program.
- Tight Application Window: With applications closing on October 28, 2026, prospective candidates have less than two weeks from the announcement to finalize their research essays and application materials.
As Anthropic seeks domain specialists to help Claude reason through complex domain problems, this initiative represents a significant opportunity for eligible researchers who already hold US work authorization.
